Condolence: My dear great aunt Joyce was one-of-a-kind. She had that rarest of combinations, a sweet spirit anchored by strength of presence. Even as a young child, I could sense that strength and looked up to her as a strong female figure in our family. I still do to this day. As I got older, I realize that her strength was driven by her intense loyalty and love for her family. And nothing was more emblematic of her family than her beautiful home. She spent most of her life tending to the "White House " aka "big Granny's house " in the mountains: the place where her children were born, her children raised, and where she welcomed us every Christmas season. I am so proud to say that I was named after this great woman. I carry that name, Joyce, with the reverence it now deserves. She will be missed beyond words.
Condolence: I always enjoyed my conversations with Mrs. Rice. Her smile was a beautiful one and I liked to think of she and my mom being friends as they grew up in Fllag Pond in their early teen years. Many of us will miss seeing her at family gatherings and showers and other family events.
