Ricky Lynn Bennett, age 62, 563 Hensley Road, Flag Pond, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He lived most of his life in Unicoi County.
Ricky was a United States Navy Veteran having honorably served his country from 1973-1983. He was a Gunner's Mate First Class (GMG1) and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Good Conduct Award. Ricky was a member of Higgins Chapel Baptist Church.
Ricky was a very appreciative heart transplant recipient twenty years ago. His family would like to extend a very special thank you to the organ donor and the donor's family which enabled them to have twenty more years with Ricky. The family would also like to thank the Tennessee Dialysis Center for their care and kindness toward Ricky over the years.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Will Bennett; maternal grandmother, Ethel Tolley Bennett and father-in-law, Clarence Sparks.
Ricky leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife of twenty-four years, Melinda Bennett; his mother, Robbie Tipton, Erwin; one son, Jacob Bennett, Nashville; two daughters: Kelly Bennett, Erwin and Emily Bennett, Nashville; one brother, Tony Tipton, Florida; one sister, Glenda Tipton, Maryville; mother-in-law, Mary Sparks, Flag Pond; four aunts: Catherine Arenas, Priscilla Saylor, Phyllis Masters and Peggy Wright who were all like sisters to him; cousin, Denny Bennett who was like a brother to him; lifelong friend, Roy Thatcher, Illinois; several aunts, nieces and nephews also survive; his dog, Molly who was his constant companion for fifteen years.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the Higgins Chapel Baptist Church. Reverend Edward Hoyle and Reverend Jerry Keasling will officiate at the 3:00 P.M. funeral service. Trey Whitson will share remarks. Music will be provided by The Gary Mainer Family. Pallbearers will be Adam Sparkle, Isaac Mainer, Gary Mainer, Maurice Higgins, Denny Bennett and Mickey Campbell. Interment will follow in the Berry Hensley Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by Greene County Honor Guard.
