Kermit "Gene" Hurley, age 78, Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Grundy, VA but lived most of his life in this area. Gene was a son of the late Elmer Hurley and Ida Blankenship Hurley Woodward.
He was self-employed in the Trucking Industry retiring after fifty years of service. Gene was a member of Fishery Community Church and formerly attended Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Unicoi County Humane Society. Gene was a Benefit Planner for Helping Hands, which helped fund medication for the Elderly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Foster Hurley on March 24, 2008; two sisters: Janie Peters and Judy Shelton.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, four sisters: Buddie Heimbach (Pete), Pat and Cathy Woodward, all of Jonesborough, Sandy Reece (Ronnie), Clarksville; several nieces, nephews, great niece, great great niece; special family friends: Rachel and David Livingston, Little Princess Raylee and Little Man Chandler; many close friends: The Hahn's Family, The Buchanan Family, The Estep Family and his church family.
The graveside service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, March 23, 2019 in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pastor Steve Rice will officiate. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 11:55 A.M. on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made in memory of Gene to: Unicoi County Animal Shelter, 185 N. Industrial Drive, Erwin, TN 37650 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorial Department, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
