Artie Lea Bennett Whaley, age 93, Erwin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 7, 2019. She passed away peacefully at the Unicoi County Christian Care Center while she was surrounded by her loving family. Artie Lea was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Thomas and Lockie Lingerfelt Bennett.

She was a former employee of Colonial Hill Nursing Home where she worked for many years in the Housekeeping Department. Artie Lea was an active member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church for sixty-four years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Whaley; one son, Randy Whaley; one daughter, Charlotte Cooper; one brother, T. J. Bennett; two sisters: Madge Bailey and Willa Dean Shelton.

Artie Lea leaves behind to cherish her memory, one son, David Whaley (Pam), Johnson City; one daughter, Joy Whitson (Doug), Erwin; five grandchildren: Scotty Whaley (Kelly), Nathan Whaley (Karen), Thomas Whaley (Lydia), Jason Cooper and Gaynell Hughes (Nick); fourteen great grandchildren; one brother, J. E. Baldy Bennett (Beverly), Erwin; son-in-law, Robert Cooper, Erwin; daughter-in-law, Debbie Whaley (Johnson City); several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Monday, November 11, 2019 at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of Gaynell Hughes, 322 Scott Road, Unicoi, TN 37692. Reverend Kevin Laws, Reverend Ferrell Peterson and Brother Jeff Autrey will officiate at the 7:00 PM service. Music will be provided by June Leonard and Chad Lakey. Committal will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday in the Evergreen Cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:00 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Unicoi County Christian Care Center Staff, Avalon Hospice, Dr. Miller and special friend, Karen Murphy.
